Construction subcontractors

Your CIS refund, filed for a flat fee.£249 flat. You see the refund figure before you pay.

The fee is the same whatever the refund. HMRC pays the money into your own account, and the return carries the name of the chartered accountant who filed it.

  • £249 for this year's return, paid when you approve it with the refund figure shown. £149 if no refund is due.
  • £349 CIS Year: refund plus four quarterly updates from April 2027 (£149 if no refund).
  • £399 for up to four back years.
  • No other charges. Claiming direct from HMRC yourself costs nothing.
  • Prices checked on 1 November 2026.

See the number first

Three figures from your CIS statements and you get an estimate on this page, before you give us your name. Two refund firms' own sites show £354 flat and 36% of the refund (1 November 2026). On a £2,000refund, 36% is £720. Here it is £249.

  • Registered subcontractors have 20% deducted; unregistered 30%.
  • Your personal allowance of £12,570 is ignored by the deduction, which is why most people are owed money.
  • Expenses reduce the tax due further: van, fuel, tools, protective kit, phone, insurance, accountancy.

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group warns that a firm paid a percentage of the refund has a reason to inflate the claim. A fixed fee removes that reason.

Put in what you were paid and the estimate appears here.

An estimate, not a calculation. Income tax only at 2025/26 rates with a £12,570 personal allowance; it ignores National Insurance, student loans, other income and anything HMRC already owes or is owed. The return itself is prepared properly from your statements.

Three prices, one desk

The first and the last are this year's refund and earlier years, paid when you approve them. CIS Year is for the subcontractors HMRC moves into quarterly digital filing from 6 April 2027: the refund and the four updates, together.

Are you in from April 2027?

One figure decides it: what you were paid in 2025/26 before the 20% came off and before expenses, plus any rent. Over £30,000 and HMRC requires four quarterly updates a year from 6 April 2027, on top of the return. HMRC writes to you after it has looked at your 2025/26 return, which is due 31 January 2027.

  • Signing yourself up has needed an identity check in the HMRC app since 13 October 2026. As your agent we do the sign-up for you once you have authorised us.
  • The quarterly updates carry no CIS figure. HMRC fills in the deductions your contractors reported when the year-end return is done, and we check them against your statements.
  • No penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year (Budget, 28 October 2026). A late year-end return still earns one.

Under £30,000 and nothing changes for you until at least April 2028: the refund service above is all you need.

Does MTD apply to you, and from when?

The gross figure on your CIS statements added up for the year, not the amount that reached your bank. A rough number is fine.

Put in the income figure and the answer appears here.

Thresholds from gov.uk, "Find out if and when you need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax", last updated 26 March 2026, checked 1 November 2026. An estimate from the figures you typed; the engagement checks the real ones.

What happens

Send photos of your statements

Over WhatsApp. Your mobile and a photo of one CIS statement to start; the rest of the statements, your expenses and the account HMRC should pay into follow in the thread. Missing a statement? HMRC's record of your deductions fills the gap.

The return is prepared and you approve it

You see the refund figure and the lines that earned it before anything goes to HMRC. Approve it and pay on the same page; we file once it is paid.

HMRC pays you

Into your own account. 2026 guides quote two to twelve weeks; gov.uk says within eight for company claims. We message you every two weeks until it lands.

How contact works, and our terms in five lines

How contact works

  • Ring our number and a named person texts you back.
  • Everything is then in writing, in one thread you keep.
  • If HMRC ever needs you to phone them (security checks sometimes do), we send the number, the reference and what to say.
  • No app to install. It all happens in the chat you already use.
  • Photos leave the chat into your file within 48 hours.
  • You pay when you approve the figure, so nothing is owed after filing and there is nothing to chase.

Our terms in five lines

  1. The price you sign at is the price for the year.
  2. Next year's price is stated before you decide, and nothing renews by itself.
  3. A named chartered accountant signs your return, and you are told who before it is filed.
  4. Your records go to you or your next accountant within five working days of asking, free.
  5. No marketing messages unless you tick yes, and every one has a one-tap stop.

Common questions

Why am I owed a refund?

Your contractor takes 20% off every payment (30% if you never registered) before you see it. That deduction ignores your £12,570 tax-free allowance and all your expenses, so for most subcontractors it is more than the tax actually due for the year. The difference comes back once a tax return is filed.

When should I file?

From 6 April, as soon as you have the year's statements. The earlier the return goes in, the earlier HMRC pays. The legal deadline for the 2025/26 return is 31 January 2027, but waiting for the deadline means waiting for your money.

How long does HMRC take to pay?

HMRC sets the timing. Guides published in 2026 quote anything from two to twelve weeks, and gov.uk says within eight weeks for company claims. We record our own filed-to-paid days and publish them monthly on the how-long page. There is no faster-refund add-on here because nobody can make HMRC faster.

Where does the money go?

Straight from HMRC to your own bank account. We never take an assignment of your refund. Since 15 March 2023 the law treats an assignment of an income tax repayment as void, so an agent asking you to sign one is asking for something HMRC will not honour.

What do you need from me?

Your UTR, the CIS deduction statements your contractor must give you each month (photos are fine), and your expenses: van, fuel, tools, protective kit, phone, insurance. If a statement is missing, HMRC's own record of your deductions fills the gap; we ask your contractor only with your say-so.

Why might my refund differ from a mate's?

Nothing goes on your return without a statement, receipt, bank line, mileage log or HMRC's own flat rate behind it, so if HMRC asks, we can show them. That can make a refund smaller than one built on round-number expenses. We answer HMRC's questions on returns we filed at no charge.

Can I just do it myself for free?

Yes. HMRC's Self Assessment service is free, and if your year is simple you can file it yourself. People pay us because they want the expenses done properly, the return signed by a chartered accountant, and someone to chase HMRC.

What happens from April 2027?

If what you were paid before deductions in 2025/26, plus any rent, was over £30,000, HMRC requires quarterly digital updates from 6 April 2027. That is most full-time trades. HMRC writes to you after it has looked at your 2025/26 return. The Budget on 28 October 2026 confirmed that nobody joining in April 2027 gets penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year; a late year-end return still counts. The checker on this page tells you where you stand from one figure.

What does CIS Year include, and what does it not?

Year one: we sign you up to Making Tax Digital and become your agent, file your 2026/27 return once your March statement is in (contractors have until 19 April 2027 to issue it), HMRC pays the refund to your own account, and we send your four quarterly updates for 2027/28 through a bookkeeping app we set up for you. The 2027/28 year-end return is next April's job and next year's fee. The quarterly updates are running totals of income and expenses; no tax is worked out or refunded on them, so the refund still comes once a year.

How is CIS Year paid?

Nothing at sign-up: no card, no mandate. When your return is ready we send you the draft with the refund figure and the lines that earned it. You check it, approve it and pay £349 on the same page (Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card). We file the moment the payment clears and HMRC's receipt lands in your WhatsApp. If the return shows no refund is due, the fee is £149. We never receive the refund; HMRC pays it to your own account. Nothing renews unless you say so.

What if HMRC says I am not in Making Tax Digital after all?

Then CIS Year becomes the ordinary refund service at £249, paid when you approve the return, and the difference is never charged. The checker on this page is an estimate from the figure you type; HMRC's letter and your filed 2025/26 return decide.

Start your refund

Nothing is owed until you have agreed a fee in writing. Your details are used for this enquiry and nothing else.

Useful to have ready

  • Your UTR (ten digits, on HMRC letters).
  • CIS deduction statements from each contractor (HMRC's record fills any gaps).
  • Rough expenses: van, fuel, tools, kit, phone, insurance.
